Descriptive Language and The Lady of Shallot In any piece of lyrical poetry, authors must masterfully use the language of the poem to covey the intended meaning. The second part of â€Å"The Lady of Shallot† reveals much more of the outside world than the confines on the tower of Shallot. Tennyson uses Part II to show the Lady of Shallot’s need for contact with the brilliant world he has built through vivid description. It begins by speaking of the â€Å"magic web with colors gay† which â€Å"she weaves by night and day† (Griffith 333). This small passage is quite important to the rest of the story. By describing this â€Å"magic web† that the Lady of Shallot painstakingly spends all her time on, Tennyson is conveying a message much bigger. In this stanza, the â€Å"magic web† is the Lady of Shallot’s life. She constantly works on this â€Å"web† and it is all she has ever know. And as she weaves, the Lady of Shallot gazes through a mirror and sees â€Å"shadows of the world† (Griffith 333). And this is exactly what she is witnessing, shadows; since she isn’t involved wit h this outside world, the happenings are never more than images—never reality. The Lady of Shallot contently continues â€Å"to weave the mirrors magic sights† (Griffith 333). Parents need more than a diagnosis. It helps to understand a problem in a manner that can tell us how a potential solution may work. It’s not enough to say that a child is depressed and they need to talk to a counselor. A child who is living in an abusive home may be depressed and emotionally withdrawn, but they don’t necessarily need therapy to express their emotions. The family may be the more important focus and the most important part of the solution. Counseling and Therapy. Counseling and therapy is a mixed bag as far as solutions go. There are more than 200 types of counselors and therapists. Trying to find the right one can be overwhelming or end up a waste of time. There is also a great deal of similarity between some counselors and some therapists. Counseling is not therapy. Counseling usually results in a realization, a plan or a decision. A therapist provides an environment of activities that bring about change – almost like exercise. There are no simple words of advice or a formula that will absolutely insure that your family or child will find the right person. Trial and error may be required. But there are four guidelines that have been shown to increase the likelihood of success. Become invested. Educate yourself, gather information and become actively invested in understanding the problem and selecting a counselor or therapist. Learn how it works. Don’t select a particular counselor or therapist unless you believe they can clearly describe the problem, how their approach to therapy or counseling works, and how that approach will resolve the problem. The relationship heals. The relationship you and your child have with a counselor or therapist as well as their approach are equally important. Work with people you and your child trust, like and believe is competent. Get references. Ask for the names of other parents or professionals who can recommend a potential counselor or therapist. There is no better reference than a credible recommendation and past success with similar problems. Medications. The use of medication can present a real solution and a real problem for most parents. Medications can have a powerful effect on the mood and behavior of children. For parents who have tried everything else, medications can make the difference between a life lost and a chance to become a reasonably successful adult. There are certain realities when one decides to use medication. For one thing, psychiatric medications for behavioral and mental health problems will treat the symptoms and not the cause. Medications do not cure psychological, emotional and behavioral problems. Psychiatric medications that are used to treat depression, anxiety, mood swings, attention deficits, hyperactivity and disorganized thinking always affect another part of a child’s body and brain. These side-effects are not clearly understood and the long term impact on growing children is still uncertain. Law suites are surfacing and legislators are proposing legislation to address recognized dangers in the wrongful medication on children. While one should be cautious about the use of medications to treat behavioral problems, there is certainly a place for these drugs. In severe cases, and cases where parents cannot afford therapy and special schools, medications can bring hope to an otherwise hopeless situation. Put simply, children are persuaded and impressed by the people they spend the most time with and the people who matter most. That should be the child’s parents and family. Why? Because a therapist can only provide an exceptional environment, relationship and activities for an hour or so a week. Individual counseling and therapy may not be enough for most children especially if that child is facing social pressure, temptations, painful experiences and inappropriate role models during the remainder of the week. In most cases, individual therapy or counseling without parental or family involvement is not enough. In some cases, therapy and counseling can result in a child developing unrealistic expectation of their parents and family. It is easier to be a therapist than it is to be a parent. This is why family education and involvement in counseling and therapy may be essential. Therapy and counseling should never replace the essential role of parents or a family. It should support those roles. But if parents are unwilling or unable to become involved with their child or in therapy, then therapy can provide the support that some children desperately need. Peers and Social Pressure. At a very early age, many children are profoundly influenced by their peers. It has been repeatedly observed in social science that children learn behaviors and will adopt the attitude of children they are emotionally bonded with. As children begin to bond with other children, they seek approval, advice and even direction for their life. The struggle for independence and separation from parents is a natural process. However, problems will invariably surface, attitudes may become hostile, and values can become lost when parents become less involved with their children. Social pressure is a powerful tendency for children to imitate and adopt the behavior and emotional sensitivity of others. Children begin to think the way they talk with their friends. Children tend to become what they think about.

This Graph has been plotted and included on the next page. By looking at the data on the graph a simple line of best fit was plotted on the Velocity at A data, this line shows how close the results are together and how well correlated they are. As can be seen, the data is all related very closely together as the line fits very well into the data. Trolley Acceleration: Another graph of the Velocity at A against the Velocity at B was plotted to check the data. This shows how the speed changed along the trolleys journey and due to the almost perfect straight line fit it seams obvious that the speed of the trolley is increasing at a steady, constant rate. This suggests that the acceleration of the trolley is constant as physics suggests it should be through Newtons Laws stating that F=ma therefore in order for the trolley the change its acceleration it would have to change either the force acting on it which is gravity and wont change or it has to change mass, which it also cant. Therefore Acceleration must stay constant. One of the general equations of motion can be used here: The formula above can be used to calculate the velocity on an individual trolley experiment. This will give the acceleration of the trolley because we know that v is the velocity at point B, u is the velocity at point A and s is the distance between A and B which is 10cm. The values stick at approximately 0.466 as a simple average, but this will not do scientifically, therefore another graph can be plotted so that the acceleration can be calculated that way. Using the equation earlier and re-arranging it so it fits a y = mx + c style graph equation, the acceleration can be calculated from the y intersect of the trend line. According to the equation found, the acceleration should be half of the value of the y intersect. The data was then plotted onto another graph and the software found the best trend line and gave the equation for it which on the printed graph (included on the next page) reads as: y =0.987x + 0.0991 This means that the acceleration should have been 0.0991 x 5 = 0.4955m/s2 The Angle of the slope: The trolley was released on a sloped air track set at a consistent angle. This angle was not given in the results of the experiment or in the original data. Therefore it must be calculated. One way of calculating the angle is to use trigonometry to work out the angle between the forces and movements at work. The force causing the trolley to accelerate is gravity. This acts vertically downwards and is a constant. Using the acceleration as calculated in the previous exercise you get the following equation: Because this equation uses the acceleration which was proved to be a constant previously and gravity which is also a constant, the angle should certainly be a constant too, but thinking the other way around. We know the angle was constant in the experiment and so that proves through the formula that acceleration also has to be constant. This vertical height is very useful in calculating the Kinetic energy of the trolley and can also be used to calculate the angle. The gradient of the line connecting the data should certainly have a gradient of 19.62 and should cross at the origin. The graph which was plotted does fit these predictions which helps to promote my findings as being correct. Problems with the results: By looking carefully at the data given to me in the beginning and by looking at some of the graphs plotted originally it appears that some if not most of the data is inaccurate. The readings start off fine up to the 30.0cm test, but the next test appears to have been exactly the same distance up the slope as the previous one, thus giving two readings for 30.0cm and skewing the data on the graph. This is the first obvious error on the data. The next area where error appears to have arisen is on the acceleration calculated. Each result should, according to physics, be the same, however the readings seam to vary a great deal around the calculated valve. This error has been discussed on the Graph of the different accelerations. It could be due to the errors in measurement on the original data of à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½0.0005s on each time reading and à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½0.2cm on each distance reading. However the first error discovered will have has a large effect on the 40.0cm reading and the next error may explain the rest of the data: By looking at the graph of distance released up the track against velocity, it looks like the data after the repeated result is all wrong. By looking at the trend of the data before and after the kink, is appears that they share a similar gradient but the two lines are offset from each other. If each of the readings after 30.0cm were shifted down by 10.0cm and re-plotted it would form a far smoother curve. It is my prediction that during the experiment, the data got out of line and each experiment after the 30.0cm reading was really the test before it and so instead of the y values being: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 they should be: 10, 20, 30, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 This shows how the data has become out of line and therefore needs further investigation. In order to see whether the height readings are correct a formula can be constructed to use the acceleration and velocities between points A and B and the angle of slope, regardless of the actual distance up the slope to calculate what y was for that test.
